WSSC Water cares about its carbon footprint!

Starting in 2012, WSSC Water has developed annual inventories of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions for its operations. The inventories quantify the GHG emissions that result from the energy-intensive processes required to treat and distribute drinking water for public use and to collect and treat wastewater before discharge and are the basis for the GHG Action Plan. GHG reduction strategies included in the upcoming CY 2023 GHG Action Plan will be based on WSSC Water’s current goal to reduce GHG emissions to net zero by 2050. The GHG action plan through CY 2022 included GHG reduction strategies based on the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government’s GHG goal to reduce GHG emissions at WSSC Water by 10 percent every five years through 2030 using technologies and practices available at that time. Other changes to be incorporated in CY 2023 reporting include the WSSC Water goal to reduce GHG emissions to net zero by 2050 and quantification methods for methane and nitrous oxide GHG emissions generated in the wastewater treatment process.
